Personalized Breast Care After Breast Surgery
Breast prostheses, also known as breast epitheses, are used to restore the natural shape of the breast following breast surgery or in cases of breast asymmetry. Depending on the type of surgical procedure, anatomical conditions, and individual needs, various treatment options are available.
The range extends from lightweight fabric prostheses for initial care to full silicone prostheses and partial prostheses, all the way to custom-made prostheses. In addition, special breast prostheses are available for recreational activities and use in water.
Initial Care – Lightweight Breast Prostheses After Surgery
Immediately after breast surgery, the tissue is often still sensitive. For this initial phase of care, particularly lightweight fabric prostheses are therefore used.
These are made of soft textile materials and are filled, for example, with cotton wool or special fiber fillings. They serve to temporarily restore a natural appearance while the wound heals and prevent unnecessary strain on the surgical site.
Lightweight breast prostheses can also be a suitable option during radiation therapy.
Once the wound has healed sufficiently and depending on the individual course of treatment, a permanent silicone prosthesis can be fitted.

Full Prostheses – Silicone Prostheses Following a Mastectomy
Following a complete mastectomy, full silicone prostheses are used to restore the shape of the breast and compensate for the lost volume.
Modern silicone prostheses are available in various shapes, sizes, and weights. Their design is modeled after the natural breast and allows for anatomically adapted restoration.
Depending on individual needs, various types are available:
- Classic silicone prostheses: For natural restoration of shape and weight.
- Lightweight prostheses: Weight-reduced models designed to minimize physical strain.
- Self-adhesive breast prostheses: Special designs that adhere directly to the skin.
- Breast prostheses with climate control: Models featuring special materials or surface textures to promote air circulation.
The selection depends, among other factors, on body shape, skin type, and the condition of any scars.

Partial and Compensatory Prostheses – Correcting Breast Asymmetry
After breast-conserving surgery or breast reconstruction, differences in breast shape and volume may remain.
Partial and compensatory prostheses are designed to specifically compensate for missing tissue, unevenness, and differences in size.
They are available in various shapes, sizes, and material thicknesses. Depending on the design, they are inserted into suitable bras or worn directly on the skin.
Compensatory prostheses can also be used for naturally occurring breast asymmetries.

Custom-Made Prostheses – Individually Crafted Breast Prostheses
If off-the-shelf breast prostheses do not provide sufficient compensation due to specific anatomical conditions, individually crafted custom-made prostheses may be an option.
They are manufactured based on the patient’s personal body contours as well as the individual breast and scar situation.
Custom-made prostheses allow for precise adaptation to the existing anatomy and can be used especially in cases of pronounced asymmetries or complex postoperative conditions.
Medical necessity and potential coverage by health insurance are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Swimming Prostheses – Breast Prostheses for Use in Water
Swimming prostheses are specifically designed for use while swimming and during other water sports activities.
They are made of water-resistant materials and are suitable for use in chlorinated and saltwater. Their special shape and surface texture help water run off.
When combined with appropriate prosthetic swimwear, they provide visual breast symmetry during water activities.

Leisure and Lightweight Prostheses – Lightweight Alternatives for Everyday Life
Leisure and lightweight prostheses are characterized by their low weight and soft materials.
They can be used, for example, during rest periods, at home, or during certain recreational activities when a traditional silicone prosthesis is considered too heavy or uncomfortable.
Depending on the design, they can serve as a complementary option to a regular breast prosthesis.
